The 2019 BMW 4-series Gran Coupe is a handsome four-door based on the 3-series sedan, with the added practicality of a hatchback and a folding rear seat. The 4-series Gran Coupe's two turbocharged engines provide more than enough gumption for spirited driving, and the eight-speed automatic transmission handles gear changes with aplomb. Wearing the 430i name on its shapely rear end, our test vehicle was powered by a 248-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Sprinting from zero to 60 mph in a brisk 5.1 seconds. The turbo four pulls strongly, runs smoothly, and emits a muted burble that's appropriate for the Gran Coupe's sporty appearance. Boasting a host of luxury features, a driver-focused cockpit, and rich materials throughout, the 4-series Gran Coupe's cabin feels more upscale than its rivals. A driver-focused design angles the center-stack slightly toward the left, and a straight-forward driving position puts all controls right where they should be. The 4-series Gran Coupe's fastback rear end disguises a practical hatchback design that opens up to a large and commodious cargo hold. In our testing, our 430i xDrive fit six carry-ons behind its rear seat and 15 with the rear seat folded in its almost-flat position. The 4 Series Gran Coupe is comfortable and quiet on the road and offers a suitable amount of performance. The handling feels rewarding thanks to a well-tuned suspension. A quiet and soft ride on the highway is the defining characteristic of the 4 Series Gran Coupe. It's adept at keeping passengers comfortable, and the 430i does well with any kind of long freeway journey or commute. Ride comfort is especially good in the default Comfort setting. Sharp impacts are still felt but they are more than adequately softened. The Gran Coupe's interior is comfortable, with relatively easy access to the front seats and a good driving position. Sliding in and out of the front seat is easy because the seats are at the right height for most adults and there's no need to duck through the entry. The driving position has plenty of adjustability. The door panel and center console armrests are placed at a comfortable height as well. There's plenty of legroom for an average-size adult, both front and rear. Front headroom is plenty adequate for a 6-footer. As is typically the case, BMW's proprietary technology is a strong point. Their navigation systems, voice controls and upgraded audio system are all nearly perfect in the 4 Series. The optional Harman Kardon audio system is superb. Sound quality, even at the highest of volumes, is undistorted and clear. Every navigation command is easily understood, and the map is on a crisp display.
