The Overtrail version is impressively capable off-road too. Lexus is chasing competing priorities with the GX, that the SUV be both luxurious and comfortable while maintaining high capability off-road. With the 2024 model the brand has moved the SUV forward in both arenas. How does the GX drive? A brand-new powertrain and platform have invigorated the GX. The GX's turbocharged V6 and 10-speed transmission form a potent pairing. In our testing, the GX accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in a competitive 6.7 seconds. There's plenty of power for passing slower traffic or merging onto a highway. It's also smooth and responsive around town. The GX is unfazed when driving over broken pavement. Its suspension does a great job of sorting out bumps and keeping the cabin serene. The cabin is also very quiet at highway speeds. We don't normally think of Lexus as having the coolest designs. But the GX not only looks fantastic; it has the driving chops to back it up. Its powertrain delivers effortless power, and though the Overtrail models are built to be very capable off-roaders, they don't sacrifice any on-road dynamics or luxury in the bargain. The GX is a vehicle that you'll be excited to drive each time you get behind the wheel. Punchy turbo V-6 powertrain, high maximum towing capacity, Overtrail models are tailor-made for off-roading. A twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine is standard in the GX550. At 349 horsepower, the blown V-6 makes more power than the previous generation GX's V-8. A 10-speed automatic is also standard and all models come with four-wheel drive. Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims are decked out with more off-road goodies than the standard trims, including 18-inch wheels with 33-inch All-Terrain tires, an aluminum skid plate, an adaptive suspension system with more wheel articulation, a crawl-control feature, and selectable drive modes for differing terrains. Outward visibility is excellent, which is especially handy when navigating tight trails. We had the chance to try out the Overtrail model's advanced off-road tech during our initial test drive of the GX550 and came away impressed. All GX models come with a 14.0" infotainment system and a separate 12.3" digital gauge display.
